A team of researchers and I received a grant from the National Science Foundation to study the ethics of cyberwarfare.  The thought is that, in traditional, kinetic warfare, concepts like self-defense, aggression, and proportionality are (somewhat) straightforward, or at least tractable.  But when we turn to the cyber-realm, how do we make sense of these things?  Can traditional just war theory help us, or do we need new tools?

Over the next three years, we’ll spend some time thinking about these things.  There will be workshops, papers, and hopefully a book.  It’s a collaborative grant between myself at Western Michigan University, Patrick Lin at California Polytechnic University, and BJ Strawser at the Naval Postgraduate School.

More details are available in the press release.

UPDATE:  I was recently on Background Briefing to talk about cyberattacks, Sony, and North Korea. Thanks to Ian Masters for the invitation to participate.
